Botox / Dysport

• Neuromodulators are purified proteins that block the receptors at nerve endings. They work to prevent the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, responsible for muscle contraction. Neuromodulators are used to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing the muscles of the face into which it is injected and works to prevent future wrinkles as well as relieving jaw pain when injected into the masseter muscle of the jaw. 

• When looking at fine lines and wrinkles, we categorize them into two classes. The first is static lines, meaning lines and wrinkles that are present when are facial muscles are at rest. The second is dynamic lines which are wrinkles/fine lines that are present when facial muscles are active. Botox and Dysport act to target the dynamic lines and therefore over time with consistent use, minimize static lines. 

• After neuromodulator injections, it will take 7-10 days to see the full results of treatment. Typically, at 14 days, it is the most effective to evaluate if a patient will require higher dosing of neuromodulator product. The amount of Botox/ Dysport will vary depending on the strength of muscle contraction. 

There are several areas that Botox/ Dysport can be used. The most common areas for treatment are in the upper two-thirds of the face. Botox/ Dysport are commonly used to minimize wrinkles caused by frowning, brow furrowing, squinting, eyebrow raising, and wrinkles on the nose, just to name a few! Botox/Dysport typically lasts 12-16 weeks depending on patient absorption and muscle strength. It is recommended to be consistent over time with injections as consistent treatment has been proven to result in fewer fine lines and wrinkles.
