Aftermath \ˈaf-tərmath\
Function: noun
Definition: the period immediately following an event.

We’re not even out of first quarter 2010 yet and sports news just has my mind blown.

My last post in January had me watching the Ravens in the wild card for the playoffs. Now we all know how that  out. So here we go with the most pivotal stories in sports so far:

1. Mark McGuire

The biggest joke to me so far is how Mark McGuire finally comes clean, admitting to “low dosage” steroid use during his baseball career. Do you think it had anything to do with the fact that he is now the new hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals. What is even more appalling is that they actually bought into his lies, oops I mean, story, oops again, I mean confession. I wonder if they are going to put an asterix next to that home run record. Maybe Barry Bonds is raising hell right now. With the tragedy in Haiti, many people did not know that he even did any press regarding it. Click here for the tomfoolery at its finest.

2. New Orleans

Basically, Peyton Manning was trying to get a lunch date with Vince but NOLA beat him to it. The Who Dat nation got their Lombardi trophy right in time for Mardi Gras. Parties and parades. Now if only those still trying to come home and rebuild after Hurricane Katrina can catch a break…

3. Tiger Woods

By far the most bizarre of these stories is Tiger Woods making a public apology to the PGA, his fan, supporters, you, me, my mama, your mama (you get the picture). Obviously apologizing to me has absolutely nothing to do with what you have to do to make it with your wife and children but the world at large thinks otherwise. I wonder what would happen if a regular Joe had to experience this type of public scrutiny over a private matter. To make matters worse, one of his jumpoffs mistresses had the audacity to have her own conference, demanding an apology. My. my, my…how good press has fallen off. Click here for Tiger’s full statement.

4. Buzzer Beaters

As a big sports fan, buzzer beaters in basketball games are on the rise. Here are a few of my favorites:

1. What better way to start a new year (and decade) than with a buzzer beater? Kobe Bryant thought so with this amazing shot against the Sacramento Kings with 0.1 seconds on the clock. One word: CLUTCH! Check it out…

2. My contention has always been that college basketball always had much more suspense. So a mere two days later, Chandler Parsons of the Florida Gators, nailed this one to send NC State packing. Click here to view.

3. I have to admit that my favorite so far this year has to be Maryland’s buzzer beater against Georgia Tech last Saturday. For those not familiar, Terps coach Gary Williams called a timeout right when senior guard Greivis Vasquez made an amazing midcourt shot. Obviously, amazing shots became a habit because junior guard Cliff Tucker sent Georgia Tech home with the blank stare after sinking the buzzer beater from an inbound pass from midcourt, with 1.5 seconds left. PRICELESS! Click here for a peek.

Looking forward to everything else sports has to bring. Brace yourselves people…

Rise Above!

Regarding Tiger, there are many, many “average Joes” in the same or similar situation. They aren’t in the media like Tiger is. Tiger is a person, and imperfect person just like the rest of us. Woe unto to those that think Tiger Woods owes them a thing! Woe unto them that base their child or children’s rearing around any celebrity in the public eye. Tiger will be forgiven by God if he asks. I say we need to pray for him, his healing and for his family to get back together and be one. He is the greatest man in Golf! I can’t wait until his comeback!

I congratulate the Saints on their win in the Super Bowl this year. Job well done! So much energy and celebrating in the city of New Orleans. And, you know they probably needed that time to smile, celebrate and have a great time. However, so many are still suffering in a mighty way and it’s just awful. When will we every get it right in our country?? When?
